Kushal on course
Fine run by sprinter
ASHFORD Athletic Club sprinter Kushal Limbu, who is hoping to compete at the London 2012 Paralympic Games in September, started his 2012 season with a win and personal best at the Crystal Palace open sprints competition last week.
Competing in his first ever indoor 60m race Kushal won his first race in a time of 8.56s; 45 minutes later he improved his time to 8.44s to finish second in his race.
Kushal is classified as a T43 athlete for the Paralympics was the only disabled athlete competing at the competition and forms part of his preparations for competing at the London 2012 Paralympics that start on August 29 in both the 100m and 200m sprint events.
Kushal has been invited to compete at the Olympic stadium on Tuesday, May 8 in the Paralympic test event.
Kushal, a sniper with 2nd Battalion the Royal Gurkha Rifles, was on his second tour of Afghanistan when he was blown up in November 2008.
He was returning from patrol in a convoy of five Warrior carriers near Musa Qala, Helmand Province, when his vehicle struck a large improvised explosive device.
Kushal’s training partners Nathan Fatola and Chris Meakin were also in action both running personal bests in their first races of the indoor season. Nathan ran 7.46s and Chris 7.62s both are hoping to improve these times at the Kent Indoor Championships on Sunday.
Fourth for Candy
ASHFORD AC’s veteran Candy Hawkins just missed a medal at the European Deaf Athletics Championships in Turkey taking fourth in the 5000m.
She recorded a slow time of 20 minutes 48 seconds in a field of eight athletes and only six finished due to the high humidity and altitude problems.
Candy is back to normal training and hoping to go to the World Championships next year in Canada and may go for longer distance or marathon.
“I’ll have to wait and see how training is going and have a chat with my coach,” she said.
She also thanked all those people who supported funding the trip and competitions.
