VETERAN Graham Lay was one of the aces for Ashford in their Sweatshop Southern League meeting at Brighton with three victories and a second place.
A personal best 12.98m secured the A win in the shot well backed up by Chris Blandford who set his own best of 9.45m and the duo also scored strongly in the discus, hammer and javelin.
Blandford’s close battle in the A javelin earned second place but a mention as one of the athletes of the meeting with Lay winning the B event and Graham also won the B discus with Blandford third in the A event.
Blandford won the B hammer with Lay second in the A contest and another veteran Gary Carr turned on the heat to win the A 100m in 11.1 well supported by Jacob Lane third in the B race.
There was strong scoring in the 2000m steeplechase with seconds for Andrew Robertson and Kyle Denning; the high jump with seconds for Matt Smiley and Matt Hogben; the pole vault with second places by Luke Williams and Pete Le Rossignol and the triple jump with seconds for Ashley Buckham in a personal best 12.29m and veteran Steve Lake.
Lewis Smith claimed two personal bests with fine displays in the 200m and 400m and he also did well in the A long jump while Williams added a personal best in taking second in the 110m hurdles supporting Pete Davey who had two fine A thirds in the hurdles events. Denning had a pb in the strength sapping B 800m.
The women rose to the challenge despite missing some top names but the youngsters backed up by some of the veterans scored well despite notching only two overall wins.
Katie Keet won the B 100m hurdles in a personal best 41.9 and there was a best for Hattie Molloy second in the A race with 20.0 while Charlotte Tappenden won the B high jump with 1.30m backing up Katie Hamilton’s second in the A event with 1.40m.
Veteran Janine Brown showed her strength and all round abilities covering four events fourth in the A 800m well supported by Amanda Jukes second in the B race and Janine had a personal best 7:39.3 for second in the B steeplechase backing up Becky Weller.
Janine also was third in the A javelin and fourth in the B discus while fellow vets Candy Hawkins and Lesley Hall scored good points, Candy second in the A 3000m and Lesley taking on the hammer to support Abbie Purkis who also scored strongly in the A triple jump and shot and B 400m.
Under-17s Ciara Ewart, Pippi Randall, Keet and Charlotte Tappenden took up the challenge of the sprint events while Ciara notched a personal best 81.1 for second in the B 400m hurdles and picked up points in the B javelin.
Kim Smith was a fine third in the A 400m and fourth in the A discus and had a personal best 4.07m in the B long jump.

Ashford sweep to league win
ASHFORD athletes were in top form sweeping to a convincing win in the Sweatshop Southern Athletics League meeting at Winchester lifting five athlete of the match awards.
There were seven double successes led by Gary Carr’s victory in the A 100m with George Huxley’s win in the B string and George also added the B 200m in a personal best 22.6 seconds.
The battle for the A 200m needed a photo after a three way sweep on the line with 22.5 with Carr earning one of the match awards despite being given second place.
The high jump saw Matt Smiley take top honours with 1.85m and Matt Hogben took the B win with 1.75m and another double came in the pole vault won by Luke Williams in a personal best 4m with Stuart Chisholm winning the B event with 3.20m,
Chris Blandford was outstanding in the javelin winning convincingly with 51.35m to take one of the match awards while Williams was second in the B event. Blandford also scored well in the A discus and Hammer and B shot.
Under-17 Ashley Buckman had a good day winning the B triple jump with Steve Lake just edged out in the A contest and Ash was also second in the B 400m hurdles in a personal best 70.9. Lake was also second in the A long jump with young Lewis Smith winning the B jump. Lewis was also ran well in the A hurdles with a personal best 63.7.
And in another fine display of hurdling Pete Davey swept to victory in the sprint hurdles with Luke Williams completing the double winning the B race.
In the men’s middle and distances races there was good scoring from Kyle Denning, Matt Britton, Warren Uden and Kevin Williams while in the fiueld events Leighton McGarry and Iain Presnell scored vital points.
The successes continued in the women’s match led by Rachel Hanagan winning a photo for the A 100m and taking one of the match awards for her victory in the triple jump where Debbie Martin also claimed the B honours.
The duo also scored strongly in the long jump with second places respectively while Debbie added another match award for her second in the A high jump while Katie Hamilton secured the winning points in the B high jump.
Ashford pole vaulters claimed another double young Ellie Gooding again showing her class with unchallenged 3.60m vault for one of the match awards and Lana-Emily Foyle winning the B points with 2m.
Ellie also swept to a convincing A win in the 100m hurdles and Laura Hanagan was not being outshone by her sister winning the B race, taking second in the A shot and B long jump, third in the A 400m hurdles and fourth in the A hammer.
The league has also seen good performances from the youngsters of the squad with under-17 Ciara Ewart setting a pb 13.3 for second in the B 100m and third in the 200; Rebecca Cock and pb 17.5m for third in the B javelin and third in the B discus and Rhiannon Wallwork a pb 7.75m for third in the B shot, third in the A discus and fourth in the B javelin. Charlotte Tappensen also picked up valuable points in the B middle distances races.
It was the veterans Janine Brown and Candy Hawkins who challenged for the points in the A distances races and Ashford’s women also notched two fine victories in the relays.
Girls shine in opening clash
ASHFORD took two athlete of the match awards from their opening Southern League meeting at Woking after fine performances by Debbie Martin and Ellie Gooding.
Debbie was just shy of her personal best winning the A high jump with 1.70m and the talented 19 -year-old added victories in the B long jump and triple jump and a third in the shot.
Ellie was in sparkling form dominating the A pole vault with a personal best 3.85m and set further bests winning the A 100m hurdles in 15.5 seconds and her third in discus.
Another Ashford star was Rachel Hanagan after victories in the A 100 and 200m, as well as the A long jump and triple jump. The all rounder also added seconds in the A shot and B discus as well as fourths in the A hammer and javelin in an astonishing display.
Young Charlotte Tappenden made it a double success for Ashford in the high jump with a B victory in 1.35m and claimed second in the B 200 with a personal best and third in the B 100m.
Another double came in the pole vault with B victory for Lana-Emily Foyle with a personal best 2.90m and she added a third in the B 100m hurdles and fourth in the B javelin.
Ashford missed vital points particularly in the middle distance events but there were fine supporting roles from Amanda Jukes and Lesley Hall. Ashford took second in the sprint relay.
Gary Carr secured vital sprint points for the men winning the 100 and was second in the 200 and even turned his hand to shot to gain points.
Young Ash Buckman had a double success winning the B high jump in a personal best 1.60m and the B triple jump in a club double with Steve Lake who took the A honours. Lake also was second in the B long jump.
Another club double came in the steeplechase from Andy Robertson in a personal best 7:06.9 and Warren Uden who took the B points. Warren was second in the B 800m matching rising star Neil Daughters who was second in the A event in a personal best 2:04.4.
Tom Williams won the B 100m in another club double and there was a victory for Dylan Jones in the B 1500m. Dylan also was second in the A 5000m in a personal best 18:13.7.
Luke Williams had a busy day with second in the A pole vault, third in the A 110m hurdles and fourths in the A discus and javelin.
Stuart Chisholm was second in the B pole vault and Robertson was also second in the B 400m hurdles. Matt Hogben was narrowled edged into second in the A high jump and added second in the B 5000m and thirds in the B 400 and B 110m hurdles.
Jacob Lane took third in the A 400m hurdles and added points in the B javelin while youngsters Kyle Denning and Lewis Smith gained valuable experience mixing it with the senior athletes, Even team mentor Pete Le Rossignol joined the fray.
Ashford had to settle for third place overall in a start which sees all their meetings being competed for on the the road this season.
