Veterans still in the hunt

ASHFORD veterans maintained their bid for a place in the Southern Counties Veterans League play off finals on September 4 with third place in the home meeting at the Julie Rose Stadium.
Blackheath and Bromley shared top honours with Cambridge and now look hot favourites to take the league title but Ashford are still second just half a league point clear of Cambridge and Dartford A.
Ashford picked up five event wins with Pete Davey again showing his class in the V35 group winning the 400m in fine style with 53.5 but Guy van Damme, from the M45 age group, took a fine third in the B race with 59.8.
Steve Lake took the V35 triple jump honours with 11.78m and stalwart Kevin Williams won the V50 3000m with 10:09.6.
Steve Langford won the V50 triple jump with 10.07 in a close battle and added a third in the 400m with 58.5 and Mick Goodall (M60) won the V50 pole vault with 2.70m and was fifth in the V60 hammer adding vital points.
Jon Ward (M45) also stepped up an age group to take third in the V35 hammer with 33.75m and van Damme also had a third in the V35 pole vault with 2.10m.
Every point counts and Ian King and Davey contributed in the V35 3000m A and B events.

Veterans hit a bump

ASHFORD Veterans lost ground on their promotion chase in the Southern Counties Veterans League finishing fourth at Bromley and hope to hit back at home on Friday (july 1).
They are currently second in Division 1 just 10 points off leaders Blackheath and Bromley and Dartford lifted themselves into the frame after their win at Bromley.
Pete Davey and Steve Lake had a terrific double in the M35 200m winning both A and B strings, Davey clocking 24.3 and Lake 26.7 and Davey had another success in the high jump with 1.50m.
Mick Goodall gave Ashford a win in the M60 high jump with a fine 1.39m and a third in the javelin with 22.70m while Kevin Williams secured victory in the M50 1500m with 4:44.1.
Vital points were gained by Paul Wheeler in the M35 javelin. Iain Presnell in the M35 shot and M50 high jump, Wayne Howe in the M50 javelin and the duo of Anthonie van Josch and Pete Walsh in the M35 1500m.
Ashford will be missing Presnell on Friday but still hope to field a strong squad at the Julie Rose Stadium.

Full set for Lesley

ASHFORD AC’s Lesley Hall has completed a full set of medals recently at veterans events.
She took a fine silver at the British Masters 10,000m championships at Oxford in 43 minutes 23 seconds and followed up with gold at the Kent championships at Dartford over the same distance improving with 42:41.
Then there was a bronze in the British Masters 5,000m in Brimingham clocking 20:59.
Teammate Candy Hawkins secured a fine win in the Southern Counties Vets 40 champions despite difficult windy conditions with 20:07.7 and followed that up with the fifth overall in the senior women’s 3,000m race in the Kent championships at Dartford with 11.35.6.
The promising Amelia Jones was the fastest U20 runner with a personal best 11:06.9.
