Solid start for young athletes
George rises to the occasion
GEORGE Huxley was the pick of the five Ashford AC athletes who competed in Havering’s early warm-up meting at Hornchurch Stadium breaking the club’s 110m hurdles U20 record for the fourth consecutive time clocking 16 seconds dead.
He also showed good early form for the 400m hurdle season with a useful 43.0 in his first 300m hurdles race.
The five athletes enjoyed the good weather conditions with mixed success.
Short of competition practice and with mixed ability athletes extending the competition Luke Williams was a bit disappointed with his 3.5 metre best effort in the pole vault but will have benefitted from the meeting.
Blake Robinson unfortunately only managed to get one throw in the U20 men’s discus, achieving only 26.38 metres, well below his best of 32m. However, two of his “no throws” went out to around the 35 metre mark, so the rest of the season looks promising.
Sam Beckett had a poor start in the 300m hurdles, almost stopping at the first flight, and never recovering sufficiently. She did however run an excellent 100 metres, winning her race in 12.8 seconds.
Josh Brown-Araque, in only his second competition, gained personal best performances in the sprints, clocking 12.1s in the U 17 100 metres and 25.3s in the 200 metres. Once he is able to do more training sessions, he will develop into a useful sprinter.
Overall a good days work for the Ashford AC group.
