ASHFORD Athletic Club can boast another national champion following victory by Ben Isaac in the Aviva National Sportshall finals at NEC in Brmingham.
Ben, a student at Maidstone Grammar, won the Under 13 standing triple jump in his first national finals with a tremendous leap of 7.55m.
He was one of only three U13 athletes to be invited as an individual following his success in the South East Regional finals at Burgess Hill earlier in the spring and he claimed the title beating off a field of 24 to win by a clear 30cm over his nearest rival.
Ashford’s U13 girls Charlotte Tappenden, Charlotte Dryland, Emem Umoh and Hannah Owen helped the Kent team to a creditable sisth place out of the 12 regional final winners.
There were golds for Hannah and Charlotte Dryland as part of the obstacle race team and Charlotte just missed out on another medal taking fourth in the speedbounce with 86 – just one off the medal placing.
The other two Ashford girls also just missed out on a medal with Charlotte Tappenden and Emem fourth in the two lap relay and Emem was just one centimetre off a medal place in the vertical jump with another fourth finish with 57cm.
Charlotte Tappenden also ran a fine two lap race finnishing the best of the talented Kent girls.
Kent also had two other national champions with Diana Adegoke from Thanet AC winning the standing long jump with 2.51m and Invicta’s Rhiannon Wallwork taking the four lap gold in 48.80. Rhiannon also just missed gold in the standing triple jump by one centimetre securing silver with a leap of 7.17m.

Wayne secures Masters titles
ASHFORD AC’s Wayne Howe had a good weekend at the KCAA Masters championships in Erith taking the M50 javelin gold with a convincing personal best 40.14m and also took the county title in the discus with 32.12m.
Wayne also claimed silvers in the hammer with a personal best 35.09m and shot with 9.56m.
Pete Davey had a fine victory in the V35 100m winning in12.28 and also claimed the silver in the 110m hurdles with 16.33. Steve Langford secured theV50 long jump with 5.20m.
At the other end of the age scale Ashford secured four medals in the Kent Combined events championships at Erith.
They did a clean sweep on the U15 girls pentathlon with rising star Kayleigh Miller-Leslie taking the gold from teammates Lauren Bamford and Hester Hill.
In the U17 hepathlon Laura Hanagan was outstanding winning the title with 3906 points while Lucy Holmes was sixth.
Ashford had a fine double in the U13 championships with Ben Isaac winning the 75m hurdles title in 12.43 holding off teammate Alex Lynch who clocked 12.86.
Alex also lifted a bronze in the 200m with 28.79 after winning his heat in 28.46.
Emily Hamlyn took a silver in the 70m hurdles with 12.45 but narrowly missed out qualifying for the final in the 150m.
In the boy’s shot Edward Miller claimed silver with 7.16m with teammate Jack Munford third with 5.47m and Miller just missed another medal taking fourth in the 100m with 14.11..
Daniel Steadman took the silver in the javelin throwing 29.77m and reached the final of the 800m finishing in fifth place while Amber Guyatt missed a medal on countback in the girl’s high jump taking fourth with 1.25m.
U13s show the way
A SUPERB display by Ashford U13 boys helped keep the club in the title race in the Kent Young Athletes League meeting at Erith.
They finished a fine second spurred by three double successes and victory in the relay.
Alex Lynch led the way winning the 75m hurdles with Ben Isaac taking the B string honours and they were joined by George Hogben and Luke Busumbru to take the 4x100m relay. Lynch also also took second in the long jump and third in the 200m.
Another winning double came in the discus where Luke dominated the A event winning with 19.25m while Lewis Hagger took B honours with a fine 13.17m.
Isaac had a convincing win in the A javelin with 25.64m with Edward Miller the B winner with an equally impressive 22.48m. Ben also won the B 200m while Miller secured victory in the B 100m.
Hagger also capped a busy day with second in the B high jump wher Hogben finished third in the A event and Lewis was also second in the B shot with George third in the A throws.
Also in action were Jacob Sivyer and Sam Marsh.
The U15 boys were lifted by a a double second in the 100m from Nathan Fatola and George McClennan.
Nathan was also third in the long jump, fifth in the discus and anchored the 4x100m squad that took a fine second along with Temi Banwo, Max Reeves and Wesley Potter.
McClennan notched a very close second on the line in the 400m and was fourth in the 800m where Declan O’Driscoll was third in the B race.
Other thirds came from Reeves in the A 80m hurdles and B discus and Potter in the B long jump.
The U13 girls also had a good day just edged into third while the U15s emulated the boys by also taking fifth.
Young Emem Umoh was the U13 star winning the 150m on the line with Eleanor Potter third in the B race and Emem also won the B javelin, where Annamarie Gould was second in the A event, and was also second in the A long jump.
Eleanor won the B 1200m walk with Amber Guyatt in second in the A walk and there wasa double second for Amber and Annamarie in the 600m.
Emem was joined by Mary Coleman, Georgia Bamford and Emily Hamlyn for second in the 4x100m relay. There was another two A & B second places in the discus for Coleman and Rebecca Cock while in the shot Coleman was third in the A competition and Bamford second in the B contest.
There were three victories for the U15 squad with Lauren Bamford winning the A 75m hurdles convincingly and Rebecca Roddy claimed A success and Charlotte Roberts the B honours in the 1200m walk.
Lauren also claimed thirds in the A 300m and shot and a second in the 4x100m relay along with Hamlyn, Amber Currie and Hester Hill.
Hester was third in A high jump and B discus while there were A and B thirds for Hamlyn and Currie in the long jump and Polly Abbott and Erin Maxwell in the javelin.
The girls’ teams finished third overall on the day.
