TWO club records fell as Ashford AC cemented their place at the top of the Southern Counties Veterans League, Kent Division, at Erith.
Kevin Williams smashed the M50 800m club record by a huge 13 seconds clocking 2:21.5 while Dave Fox broke Ted Hawkins’ 17-year-old club record winning the M60 discus with a superb 30.68m.
Pete Davey scored a fine win the A 100m with 11.9 and also secured victory in the A long jump with 5.48m.
There were seconds for Steve Langford in the B 100m in 13.2 while Iain Presnell ran 13.1 for his second in the M50 100m. Mick Goodall was fifth with 15.3 in the M60 sprint.
There were a trio of fourths for Ashford in the 800m with Guy van Damme clocking 2:17.7 in the A race, Ian King 2:31.1 in the B event and Williams’ fine club record in the M50 race.
Davey, Langford, Steve Arnold and Charles Whitmore joined forces to win the 4x200m relay in 1:45.9. Arnold and Whitmore both clocked 13.6 as non scoring athletes in the 100m.
Langford won the M50 long jump with 4.78m while in the discus King took fifth in the A clash with 19.59; Presnell fourth in the M50 contest with 24.02m and Fox shining with his M60 victory.
Ashford finished second in the match with 56 to Blackheath’s 58 with Cambridge also pressing hard in third with 52.
The next match is on June 14 at Gillingham.

Club veteran records fall
Club record for Goodall
ASHFORD AC’s male veterans team got off to a great start in their first match of the 2010 season following their promotion to Division 1 of SCVAC last year.
Pete Davey started in great style winning the M35 200m in 24 secs with Steve Arnold narrowly third in the B string. Iain Presnell ran well for second place with 27.6 in the M50. Davey won the high jump with 1.60 and Mick Goodall also won the M50 with 1.40.
Goodall threw a M60 club record in the shot with 7.62m and Presnell 8.01m and Paul Wheeler 8.05m also scored well.
Presnell and Wheeler scored valuable points in the javelin and Guy Van Damme and Ian King also contributed to the tally in the 1500m. Kevin Williams made a welcome return on the track and was a decisive winner of the M50 1500m with an excellent time of 4.49.6.
The meeting was wrapped up in style with Ashford quartet of Davey, Arnold, Presnell and Steve Langford winning the 4x100m relay.
The overall match score was Dartford 60.5, Ashford 58, Blackheath & Bromley 55.5, Cambridge Harriers 54, Bexley 49.5, Istead & Ifield 28.5.
Two championship bests for Steve
ASHFORD Athletic Club had a good day at the Kent Multi-events, Masters and Under 13 championships with a rich haul of medals.
Highlight of the day was the two championship bests set by double gold winner Steve Langford in the M50 veterans championships.
The Ashford man launched to a record 5.30m in the M50 long jump and then had another best in the triple jump with a superb 10.45m.
There was another championship best in the M50 high jump for Mick Goodall with a fine 1.50m and he added silver in the pole vault with 3.20m.
Les Wood also claimed gold and silver winning the M60 triple jump with 8.74m and then was only denied gold in the 200m with 28.3 by a championship best 28.1 by Dartford’s Mike Nunn.
Ian Mackett loves his athletics and secures a full set in the M40 section winning the triple jump with 7.88m, silver in the hammer (11.38m) and then three bronze medals in the shot, discus and 1500m.
Ashford solitary women’s vet in action was Lesley Hall who secured the gold in the W50 1500m with 5:47.6.
At the other end of the age scale were the lively Under 13s and Ashford again shone.
Leading the way was rising star Oliver Williams with gold in the 100m in 12.9 and he added two bronze medals in the high jump (1.40m) and javelin with 31.21m.
Luke Busumbru (seventh in the 100m) joined the medal list with silver in the discus with 20.18m.
There was a walking gold for Rebecca Roddy in the 2000m walk clocking 12:27.6 while Polly Abbott performed well with fifth in the shot and sixth in the javelin. Aaron Meakin was fifth in the 75m hurdles.
The multi-event championships also reaped success for the club with young Steve Walder, who travels from Ramsgate to train at Ashford, taking a terrific gold in the Under 15 pentathlon.
Steve, pictured above, trailed in the opening two events but came on strongly with superb long and high jumps to establish a lead that he never relinquished finishing with 2129 points.
Rachel Hanagan from Canterbury was stunning in the U20 women’s heptathlon taking gold with 3892 points after wins in the 100m hurdles, 200m, long jump and 800m.
There were also silvers for Chris Blandford and Caroline Hatley.
Chris secured 4560 points in the U20 men’s decathlon showing great consistency over his 10 events as did Caroline in the U17 women’s heptahlon under 150 points behind the leader with 3619 points clocking the fastest 80m hurdles.
Laura Hanagan was fifth in the heptathlon her highlight being a stunning personal best 800m run which was the fastest in the club by an Under 17 this season.
Dan Weaver, another Thanet athlete who benefits from the training with Ashford AC, took a splendid bronze in the Under 17m octathlon with 3773 points with Adam Asher ninth with 3079 points.
In the Under 15 girls’ pentathlon Lauren Bamford just edged out teammate Hester Hill for sixth place with 2153 and 2111 points respectively. Sophie Hamlyn was 15th with 1472 points in a very competitive section.
