Bethany School 5/10k 31st August Race Report
Posted: 6th Sep 2014 by Brian Cumming
The inaugural Bethany School 5/10k saw Ashford Athletic Club runners Declan Burton and Matt Britton dominate proceedings with impressive first and second places in the 10k event.
Hosted by Bethany School, near Cranbrook, the off road course around their stunning school grounds provided both runners with an ideal late summer opportunity to test current fitness levels in preparation for their autumn races.
“Very tough and technical course, perfect cross country build up” commented race winner Declan Burton, aged 16 from Headcorn.
The race saw both Ashford AC athletes take to the front from the gun and pull away as the race progressed over the undulating, multiple terrain course.
Bethany School teacher Sarah Boyle, who co-ordinated the event said “the Bethany 5 & 10K was a lovely event. It was excellently organised by Nice Works. There was a fun and supportive atmosphere amongst gentle competitiveness and intrigue around this new course. An intimate event for now, the Bethany 5 & 10K successfully raised money for local charity Dandelion Time!“

Find A Voice 5k
Posted: 25th Aug 2014 by Kate Dickinson
The inaugural Find A Voice 5k took place on the 10th August at Ashford Rugby Club, featuring a flat scenic course using the rugby grounds and surrounding footpaths. Runners faced tough weather conditions as the remains of Hurricane Bertha swept across Ashford. The Race was organised by Ashford AC Assistant Coach and distance runner Dylan Jones, who said ‘It was great to see everyone persevering for a great cause, the turnout of 46 runners for the 5k and 11 for the children’s was pleasing considering the conditions’. Ashford Coach John Norman also assisted the event by timing the finishers, and conversing with his employer Asda who kindly donated water bottles for the event.
The race was won by Ashford AC captain Matthew Hogben in 17.14, with Jonathan Wells and Ashford and District’s Dean Bracken finishing 2nd and 3rd respectively. Ashford AC’s rising stars Marshall Smith and Ellis Bennett were next across the finishing tape with times of 19.08 and 20.13. The women’s category also saw home town success with Natalie Whiskin winning in 22.30, and fellow Ashford AC runner Isabel Dickinson in 3rd clocking 23.52. The newly formed Ashford Lions Club kindly donated the ‘Lions Cup’ for the best team, which was won by Ashford AC. The cup was presented by Lions President Ivor Groves, who was also a former Ashford AC President in the 1990’s.
All proceeds for the event went to Find A Voice, a local charity based in Beaver Lane that helps people with communication and learning disabilities. Dylan thanked Barclays and Retainagroup for match funding, and the event raised a total of £1,698.18. Find A Voice hope to make this an annual event, and feel with more publicity and better weather could lead to an even bigger turnout next year.
