AAC Race Walkers In Fine Form

Posted: 4th Apr 2017 by Lewis Smith

Ashford AC saw a well-represented race walking team present at the Cecil Gittins Memorial on Saturday, all six walkers turned out to compete at Cyclopark in Gravesend.

The race took place on the Cyclopark road circuit; a smooth, tarmac surface which is typically used for cycling races. Each lap was 2.5km long; although a smooth circuit, the athletes were contested with a range of inclines and declines. Going downhill appeared to be just as difficult though in respect to maintaining their technique. Fortunately, although a little cold at first, the weather was on their side.

All athletes started together for the 2.5km, 5km, 10km and 15km distances. First home was Devina Nova taking first place in the 2.5km walk in a personal best time of 15min 24s. Next home was Jacqueline Benson in the 5km walk in a time of 33min 24s, Jacqueline was the third lady home. Stephen Holliday was next in for the 5km walk in a time of 38min 27s. Next in was an AAC 1-2-3 in the 10km walk. Jonathan Hobbs came in first in a time of 50min 25s, next in was Marshall Smith in a personal best time of 51min 45s, followed by Coach Chris Hobbs in a time of 58min 20s. The tough circuit saw two personal bests, a solid start to the season for Chris’ group.
