Club Press Release: Ashford Athletes on the National Stage

Posted: 15th Aug 2022 by Ashford AC News

With athletes now able to compete following Covid restrictions it’s been a fantastic season finale for Ashford’s young athletes on the National stage. Last month Ashford has been represented in all the major National athletic competitions for young athletes.

Following her success at English Schools Jess Wilton (16) made her international debut representing England at the SIAB International in Belfast finishing just outside the medals in 5th in 3000m walk Final.

Ashford had 4 athletes representing Kent Schools at the English Schools Championships in Manchester the week before. Bronwyn Yeadle (18) missed out on medal and came 4th in the Senior girls pole-vault. Bronwyn only missed out on a Bronze medal on countback.

England Cross Country Champion Louis Small (18) was selected to try his luck on the track with his twin brother Jack. They joined a field of 21 elite Junior athletes with Louis finishing in 8th and Jack 11th. They both commented on how different running in the hot weather was to the rain and mud that they are accustomed to.

Kent champion Kevin Masindo (19) came a very respectable 10th in the senior boys Triple Jump Final.

Another young Ashford distance runner Wegahta Zerom (19) was representing Kent County at the SEAA Intercountry Championships in Oxford. Making his debut for Kent County he ran a very well judged tactical 5000m race from the midfield before a final push won him the race.

The twins and Wegatha were also in action at the England U20 Championships in Bedford with Louis and Wegahta opting for the 3000m. Louis finished 6th and Wegahta 17th in a very fast paced race.
Jack Small decided to race the 1500m and made the final coming home 12th.

Jaqueline Benson was a very impressive 5000m walk Silver medallist at the England U23 Championships in Bedford.

Former Kent Champion Kristian Samwell-Nash (19) also qualified for the England U23 Championships. Following a pre-season of injuries, he made the 400m semi-final but as with all of the sprints the finals were made up of international athletes preparing for the Commonwealth Games.

Ashford Athletics can now build from this impressive showing and will be training hard in the newly refurbished Julie Rose Stadium in pursuit of further success.

Kent Young Athlete league at Tonbridge last weekend

Posted: 13th Aug 2022 by Ashford AC News

24 of our Under 13 and Under 15 athletes competed at the fourth and final match of the Kent Young Athlete league at Tonbridge last weekend.

The strong U13 boys team were placed first for the third consecutive time, despite missing several athletes due to holidays.  Over all Ashford AC finished in 5th place a great achievement with this being many of the athletes first season of competition. Plans are already in place for preparing our teams for next year.  Please make contact if you would like to be involved.

There were many great individual performances with over 20 PBs and an AAA Grading and new KYAL record for Ava Chappell.

Thank you to the parents that stepped up to volunteer in the absence of Lesley who was recovering from an operation.  Thank you, Lesley, for all your support throughout the league and we wish you a speedy recovery.

If you would like to become an official, 1 day courses are available through British Athletics.  Registered officials are vital to our club and ensure we can continue to enter league events across all age groups.  Please contact Natalie or Jacqi if you'd like more information.
