Four Ashford AC Athletes Selected for the National Stage

Posted: 19th Jun 2019 by Lewis Smith

After helping Kent to victory in the South-East Schools’ Inter County Championships last weekend, Kent Schools’ have selected four Ashford Athletic Club young athletes for this summer’s English Schools’ Track & Field Championships.

The ESAA Championships will take place at the Alexander National Stadium, in Birmingham, on the 12th & 13th July. These Championships are one the largest track and field events for young athletes in Europe. This will also be the very last meeting at the iconic venue before it is re-developed in time for the 2022 Commonwealth Games.

Kristian Samwell-Nash (U17) won the 400m and was then confirmed for his selection for the third consecutive year. Kristian has already won titles in the Kent County Indoor and Outdoor Championships, and Kent Schools’ Championships, and was able to add the South-East Schools’ Inter County title to his collection. Kristian goes to Birmingham as a top five UK athlete for both the 200m and 400m. Kristian was also part of Kent’s 4x100m relay team that beat favourites Hampshire and Surrey last Saturday. This was the first time the team have run together, and with a time of 43.9s this catapults them to second place in the UK Schools’ rankings, just behind this year’s favourites, the West Midlands.

Ashford AC were proud to have two other young elite athletes selected to be part of this year’s seventy strong Kent Squad of U15, U17 & U19 athletes. After dominating the Kent County & Schools’ Championships, over a number of events, Libby Turbutt (U15) has been selected for the Long Jump at her first National Championships. Libby could also feature in the 4x100m relay team in the finals.

Michael Alijiki was also thrilled to be selected to compete at his very first major Championships, and will join the very strong U17 Boys team. Michael, Kent Schools’ Triple Jump Champion, was selected after a very impressive win against Surrey, Hampshire, Middlesex and Sussex’s top jumpers.

Louis Small, also Under-17, was selected to compete in the 1500m. Louis has had a very strong season to date and will be looking for further success at the Championships.

Five other Ashford Athletes also helped Kent win the SE Intercountry Cup but were unlucky not to be included in this year’s squad. Sarris Teale (U17) part of last year’s ESAA Team in the Long Jump, Elisha Roger (U17) 1500m, Jack Butler (U15) High Jump, Yasmin Sadler Reeves (U17) Triple Jump, Nadia Sadler Reeves (U15) Pole Vault all impressed on the day for Kent but were also just short of the qualifying standard. Millie Morris and Rachel Harding also had good performances in the race walking events, and will hope to be selected for the English Schools’ Race Walking Championships in September.
