Millie's Magnificent Medal

Posted: 2nd May 2019 by Lewis Smith

Ashford AC’s latest race walking star, Millie Morris, won a well-deserved Silver medal in the British Road Walking Championships on Sunday. Competing in the Under-17 Girls 5km, on the roads of Warwick University, Millie raced to her first national medal in 29 minutes 33 seconds.

Teammate Jacqueline Benson for once did not break any records, but won Bronze in the Under-20 Women’s 10km. Her time of 62 minutes 16 seconds was outside her best set a few weeks ago, but still over a minute faster than her Bronze medal time of last year.

Not to be outdone, training partner Katie Stringer won Silver in the Under 15 girls 3km event.

Ashford walkers are looking to dominate the walking events in the Kent County Athletics Championships on their home track in May, and add to their growing medal collection.

Ladies First in Windy Walk

On a very windy Cyclopark in Gravesend, five Ashford AC race walkers weathered the conditions to dominate the Gittins Memorial Races.

First to finish the 5km race for Ashford AC was Grace Whittingham, coming a very respectable second place with 29 minutes 9 seconds, just 5 seconds behind the winner of the Under 20 Women’s race.

In the Senior 10km race was Jacqueline Benson, who broke her own Club Record by a huge three minutes with a finishing time of 60 minutes 7 seconds. Disappointed to miss the magic hour, Jacqueline thoroughly deserved her first ever Senior win. Some way back was Lesley Hall in third place with 68 minutes 24 seconds.

While the girls were the stars of the event, the two Ashford men struggled in the conditions. Coach Chris Hobbs was a bit under par with 5th place in the Men’s 10km Walk, with a time of 66 minutes 19 seconds, and newcomer Don Arthurs came 4th in the 15km Walk in 1 hour 55 minutes and 8 seconds.
