UKYDL Division South 1D U17/U20 Match 1 Report

Posted: 2nd May 2017 by Lewis Smith

UK Youth Development League South Division. League 1D.

Venue: Medway Park, Gillingham. Sunday 30th. April

A strong squad of athletes, representing the ATIP composite team, travelled to Gillingham for their first league match of the season. The team of Under 20 and Under 17 year olds is made up from members of four clubs, Ashford AC, Invicta East Kent AC, Paddock Wood AC and Thanet AC.

Last week, the younger members of the team (U13/U15) did exceptionally well to finish third. However, the older athletes must have taken inspiration and won their match with an incredibly high score, beating their previous best score by some distance and close to 100 points ahead of the second placed team. This achievement was even more astonishing as some 50 events were not covered because of a shortage of athletes, despite 48 athletes turning up on the day.

The team’s efforts were rewarded with an amazing 36 personal best performances and 15 season’s best performances. Everyone played their part on the day including officials, helpers and parents.

Although the result of team work, there were a good number of individual performances. Multi eventer, Tyler Adams claimed personal best performances in the High Jump (1.85m) and Pole Vault (3.60m). In the longer track events, Ahferom Goitom achieved personal best efforts in the 1500m (04:53.77 ) and 2000m Steeplechase (07:32.88).

Under 17 sprinter, Matthew Elliott, is quickly closing in on his older brother’s times, winning the 100m and 200m races in 11.41s and 23.20s respectively, both personal bests. His training partner, Daniel James, improved his best times in the B string races.

Ciara Mackey claimed best times in the 1500m and 1500m Steeplechase, whilst Yetunde Mongo, having only raced 3 times in two years, ran a personal best in the 200m. In the Under 20 women’s 400m hurdles, Alex Prickett cleverly overcame a problem in her race – one of the hurdles had been left at the men’s height. The outcome was Alex achieving a personal best time, despite the problem.

Team manager, Tina Tappenden, was ecstatic with the result and is looking forward to the next meeting at the Mile End stadium on Sunday 28th May.

Posted: 23rd Apr 2017 by Lewis Smith

UKYDL Division South East 1 U13/U15 Age Group.

Medway Park, Gillingham. Saturday 22nd. April 2017

Members of Ashford AC turned out for the second match of the season. This time it was the turn of the youngest members of the club who travelled to Gillingham for their first league match of the season. The UKYDL lower age group is a national competition for boys and girls under 13 and under 15 years of age.

With a comprehensive program of events to cover, Team Manager, Tina Tappenden, was faced with only 26 athletes to cover the events, seven of the athletes were competing for the first time. The Under 13 boys could not cover a relay as only 2 athletes turned up. However, they both contested the maximum number of individual events allowed by the league rules.

The rain and wind that greeted the athletes on arrival, quickly changed to bright sunshine, bringing some cheer to the rest of the meeting. This clearly had an impact on everyone, as the teamwork and performances just got better; even the parents and supporters became more enthusiastic.

At the end of the day, the youngsters were rewarded for their efforts with an excellent third place, an outcome that hadn’t been expected at the beginning of the meeting.

In addition to the match position, there were numerous personal bests and season best performances. There were going to be personal best performances as some of the athletes were new starters, but the total of 44 was exceptional and emphasises the impact of teamwork and support.
