Long distance race walker Jonathan Hobbs, of Ashford AC, broke another Club record on Saturday, 11th November. Jonathan currently holds a huge 14 records out of the 17 senior men race walking records.

Having been building on his endurance for several months, Jonathan (24) took time out to test his fitness at the annual 'Enfield 7' miles open race walk.  Jonathan started off well taking an early lead, he was overtaken after a mile by the reigning Junior World Champion, Callum Wilkinson of the local Enfield & Harringey Athletic Club, and looked settled for second place.

The course featured many tight bends and an uneven surface, not what you want for race walking! Keeping his pace even, at just under 8 mph, he raced on to a personal best time and AAC Club Record of 55m46s. Once finishing the tough 7 mile course, Jonathan then discovered that the leader and England Commonwealth Games representative had been disqualified for 3 technical infringements. This meant Jonathan was the 90th winner of this historic race that dates back to 1920.

“I was keen to test my fitness and technique after months of hard training. I am very pleased with the result, and to win this prestigious event was a bonus,” said Hobbs later, “I can press on with my target of some fast 50 kilometre races next year.”

A huge congratulations to Jonathan for this achievement!
