Kent Schools' Championships Report

This year’s Kent Schools’ Championships proved another success story for Ashford Athletic Club’s young athletes, who represented their schools with a haul of sixteen medals. The Championships, part of the Kent School Games series of events, draws in talented school age athletes every year from all over the county.

This year’s event was held at a very wet and windy Julie Rose Stadium, so records and PBs were very thin on the ground but the title of Kent Schools’ Champion was still the aim. Ashford AC youngsters finished the day with eleven Kent School Champions!

With a busy timetable over just one day, there was limited time to compete in more than one event. However, that didn’t stop Libby Turbutt (U15 Girls) winning double Gold in the Long Jump and 200m.

National athlete, Kristian Samwell-Nash (U17 Boys), concentrating on the 200m this year, added the schools title to his Kent indoor and county titles. Sarris Teale, recently back from injury, retained her (U17 Girls) Long Jump title.

Ashford, again, were well represented in the field events with Ellis Spedding (year 7 Boys) winning Gold in the High Jump with a new U13 Boys Club Record. There was Gold also for Yasmin Sadler Reeves (U17 Girls) and Michael Alajiki (U17 Boys) in the Triple Jump. George Pegram (U17 Boys) also collected an impressive Gold in the Javelin. Jack Butler (U15 Boys) finished the collection of medals off with a Bronze in the High Jump.

Four other medals were won on the track. Al’Ameen Laval (U17 Boys) won a Silver medal in the 400m and Yasmin’s sister, Nadia Sadler Reeves (U15 Girls), won a 300m Bronze medal. Elisha Roger (U17 Girls) won a Gold medal in the 1500m and Ciara Mackey won Bronze in the Steeplechase.

England Schools’ cross country runner, Louis Small (U17 Boys), was able to convert his recent successes on to the track with a convincing win in the gruelling 3000m. His twin brother Jack ran well but just missed out on a medal.

Yet again, Ashford proved its dominance in the race walking with a 1-2-3 in the Under 17 Girls 3000m Walk. Mille Morris won Gold, Grace Whittingham Silver and Rachel Hardy Bronze. The medals continued with a Gold medal for Jaqueline Benson (Senior Girls) in the 5000m Walk.

A number of these athlete have now been selected to compete for the Kent Schools’ squad at next week’s Inter-County Schools Championships. All of these athletes will then be hoping to impress the selectors for a coveted place in the Kent team to compete at the English Schools’ Championships in Birmingham in July, one of the biggest junior athletic meetings staged in Europe.
