Below is a list of items that we advise you should have in your kit bag when you go to a competition or to a training session. You should get most of this ready the night before. Note that not all athletes will require all the items (it depends on your event), and it is by no means a complete list so feel free to add or remove items to or from your personal list.
Reminder to parents: check these things for the first few fixtures then let the athletes take responsibility otherwise it will always be Mum’s or Dad’s fault that something is missing!
- Competition vest
- Shorts
- Trainers
- Spikes/throws shoes and spare laces
- Spike key and spikes of different lengths
- Tracksuit/sweatshirt/tights/leggings/t-shirt
- Socks x 2
- Underwear
- Spare (dry) clothes to be put on after competition/training
- Waterproof clothing
- Large thick plastic sack to keep your kit dry
- Hat/baseball cap - sun or winter
- Gloves
- Sun cream/lotion
- Umbrella - for rain or shine
- Towel
- Warm up kit-tights and t-shirt etc.
- Safety-pins - at least a dozen
- Competition numbers. These are usually collected from your team manager
- Race details, timetable, directions etc. If using the coaches provided, make sure you are there in good time for departure!
- Enough food, snacks and drink (not fizzy) for the whole day (before and after competition or training)
- Water bottle
- Vaseline
- Small pack of plasters
- Things to tie hair back with, e.g. hair band
- Toiletries, shower gel etc.
- Toilet paper/tissues
- Pen and paper
- Specialist equipment e.g. tape measure, blocks, throwing implements, vaulting poles, marking tape
- Money including small change
- Sunglasses
- Magazines etc.
- Phone if needed, but make sure you can keep it safe, and it should be turned off while training, warming up and competing
- Watch/stopwatch
- Passport if competing abroad
- Strapping e.g. ankle support
- Chair/blanket
- Insulated container to keep drinks cold
- Throwing glove for hammer
- Towels for throwing, towels for personal use.
